Being Without Power

When we bought our house 3 years ago, it came with a whole house generator, which has been such a blessing as we lose power pretty frequently.

For whatever reason, the generator is not currently working. We lost power Friday night & it came back on Saturday morning for a couple hours, then went out again. It has been a long time since we’ve had to deal with no electricity & we felt unprepared. It was a good experience to see what else we could/should do to be prepared.

A few things we felt were important & didn’t necessarily have enough of:

– Flashlights (with extra batteries)

– Emergency candles (& matches or lighters)

– Water – both drinking water and non potable water to flush toilets & wash hands (with having a well, if we have no power, we have no water)

– More firewood

It was a good experience for us to go through. It’s easy to take things like electricity for granted.

  • Oh, that must have been very hard with so many people in your home. I have since heard of others with the same situation. And yes, it makes us appreciate power and many other things that we take for granted. We have a community well and have had to go without water when the well was being replaced. It’s just a good idea, as you mentioned, to have LOTS of gallons of water on hand and powerful flashlights, as candles can sometimes be hazardous. We invested in windup lights which creates light as you wind it up. It’s great! Grateful that you have a fireplace as we just have to layer on clothing and blankets at night. So glad you have power now.
