In The Shadow of The Almighty
I’ve been doing a study on Psalm 91 for the past couple months, working through it slowly with a dear friend (we’ve been friends for about 23 years even though we live far apart).
We each share our progress as we go along, talk about what we’ve learned, encourage one another. It has been a really good study.
One of our assignments the other day was to read an article John Piper had written called “Slain in the Shadow of the Almighty.”
Piper says: “The omnipotence of God means eternal, unshakable refuge in the everlasting glory of God, no matter what happens on this earth.”
It was a really good article. He was talking about how Jim Elliot, Nate Saint & the 3 others were killed & how it had to have been ordained of God. Piper also references the book Elisabeth Elliot wrote 2 years after her husband’s death called Shadow of the Almighty (an excellent book!)
This passage in Psalm 91 isn’t talking about Christians being safe from ALL things, but that sometimes death is our refuge. Above all, God is in control & we should not fear harm, because even if we do die, as Jim Elliot did, it is for God’s glory & then we have received our ultimate refuge, with God.
One thing we’ve also been learning in the study is that as Christians, God doesn’t promise us an easy path or a path free from trials or pain or hurt. But, through this hard path, He carries us & we rest in His Shadow.
With everything going on in the world, it’s a very timely study. 😊
**The study I’ve been doing is through Doorposts’ Mama’s Refill. I’ve been doing their studies for years & they are always so good. You really get what you put into it… I have merely read some studies & not gotten as much out of it as when I actually do all the homework.**
Did you all know that there’s a verse that says “the Lord rejoices in the death of his saints”
I hadn’t remembered, but that’s a very good point. Thank you! ❤
