Wild Grapes

Wild Grapes

The kids found a bunch of ripe wild grapes after the storm this week. They are tiny, with several seeds & very little fruit. Not great for eating, but as I was researching, it said you can blend them up in smoothies, seeds & all, & you get special nutrients from the seeds. Makes sense since you can buy Grape seed supplements! 😀

Grant helped me research & it looks like they are called Illinois Riverbank Grapes. We have noticed a different batch of them wrapping our fence line the past few years, but never caught any ripe ones. Looking forward to using them!

We’ve thought about freezing them for smoothies, maybe making some jam or juice.

It’s kind of hard to see, but this is a huge basket, about 1/2 – 2/3 full!

Have you ever used grapes like this? How have you used them?

  • I have used grapes for juice. I put a generous cup in the bottom of a sterilized quart jar and a half cup (ish) of sugar. Then fill to 1/2″ from top with boiling water. I seal the jars in a hot water bath. I would need to look up for how long but I use Ball Blue Book’s guidelines. Let sit at least a week for the best flavor. We sometimes mix half and half with diet gingerale. So easy and the birds like the grapes from what’s left in the jar when you’re done. Bonus! 🙂
