The Pilgrims Progress (2019)

Hi guys! I was recently asked to review a movie with an special point of looking at the violence, so I did and now I’m starting my own little blog line. I will be reviewing books and movie and audio dramas. If you want to know more about a specific entertainment venue before you actually enjoy it, I’m open to requests. 😉

I will admit that before watched this the first time it held no interest to me. I thought that it was going to be a cheesy kids movie. But less than ten minutes in, I was proved very, very, very wrong.

It starts with the finding of the “Bible”. And it actually sticks pretty close the the actual book throughout the movie.

It’s hard not to feel something tugging at your heart when you watch this movie. The emotion portrayed in Christian’s voice as he walks the path is soo real, it moves you.

The movie is very emotional. Christian cries & emits sorrow that is designed to make the watcher feel it alongside the characters.

The demons that run the city turn from men to giant, grotesque, dragonlike creatures.

A giant stone mountain yells at Christian and throws stone tablets at him and ends up falling over with Christian running away.

Apollyon looses a flock of his demon dragons and they chase Christian to the Wicker gate, where the gatekeeper beats them up with a staff. No blood is shown & it’s really cartoon, not real.

There is a ragged old man in a cage yelling, “No Hope!” that might be upsetting, but despair so often is. It’s followed by a peaceful, calming hymn where Christian loses his burden.

Lions menace Christian, but do not harm him as he enters Watchful’s house.

Apollyon shows up as the ultimate dragon critter & they fight in a lava like landscape. Christian takes a beating, but ends up stabbing the dragon in the stomach. No blood is shown and Apollyon flies away swearing revenge.

In Vanity Fair, Christian & his new Friend are arrested and led through the town as the townspeople pelt them with rocks and sticks.

They are sentenced to death and Faithful is led away. Christian sees smoke and fire rising through a window. He is rescued by a resident of the city who joins him.

Christian & Hopeful are captured by the giants of despair and thrown in a cage in a room full of skulls and knives. The giants scream at him & try to get them to kill themselves.

Supervisor tricks Hopeful & Christian into a net.

They come to a giant wave and realize it’s Death. Christian prevaricates, but eventually accepts it & jumps into the wave. Apollyon is there and menaces Christian, but is destroyed by a flash of light. Christian sinks, bleeding badly, but wakes on a sandy shore and is escorted into the Celestial City by the King Himself. Hopeful & Faithful greet him there.

Personally my favorite part in the movie is when he comes to the giant wave and Hopeful explains that its death and plunges in.

Christian falters and almost turns back, but follows Hopeful into the wave. There he is confronted by Apollyon and is killed. The screen blacks out and all my siblings start freaking out until we see Christian waking up on a beach in a brilliant new set of clothes.

The King is standing over him and explains that the blood we saw was his not Christian’s and Christian finds hopeful and they rejoice together.
The joy is soo poignant and infectious, I usually end up running outside and praising and I can’t help but feel good the rest of the day.

I would recommend this movie for children and teens and adults of all ages. It carries a message that everyone should hear and take to heart.🖤

There is quite a bit of comic relief scattered throughout Apollyon’s minions, when in human form are funny, and Christian makes a point to laugh with his friends.

Your respectfully Xanna
