Family Friendly Movie Recommendations

When I was growing up, we had a bunch of movies by “Feature Films For Families.” I have fond memories of watching them and am happy to share them with my kids. Some they have grown up watching & others they have just recently watched, but all have been loved. There are more by this company, but all of the ones I’m listing here I’ve seen personally & recommend. The others are likely good also, but I don’t feel comfortable recommending a movie I haven’t seen. 🙂

I was surprised to find that I could get a lot of them from our local library, so I wanted to share a list in case anyone wanted to check them out. 🙂 They are also available online pretty reasonably!

Some of the movies cover hard topics, but they are all really well handled with good morals & life lessons. In no particular order:

The Little Kidnappers – With Charlton Heston –  “Caring, obedience, letting go of grudges. Newly orphaned Harry and Davy go to live with their grandfather, who overcomes his prejudices when an “enemy” stands up for them in court.” One of my all time favorites! So sweet!

The Buttercream Gang – “A gang of do-gooders refuses to give up on an old friend who falls in with a bad crowd.” A great story of redemption & how showing love pays off.

On Our Own – “Runaway California orphans (Scott Warner, Amy Allred) meet a woman (Leigh Lombardi) who helps them reach their uncle in Arizona.”

Scamper The Penguin – “Two young penguins’ curiosity about their world leads to encounters with humans and other denizens of the Antarctic.” A family favorite!! Disney-esque animated movie.

Miracle At Moreaux – “A French Catholic boarding school allows three Jewish children to take refuge at Christmas during the Nazi occupation.”

Rigoletto – “A grumpy landlord (Joseph Paur) with an ear for voice offers to coach his maid (Ivey Lloyd), an aspiring singer whose mother he almost evicted.”

Behind The Waterfall – “After Tommy’s fathers recent death in an airplane crash, he and his sister are sent to live in the small town of Erinville. Tommy and his cousin Alex spend the summer trying to prove the town story teller is a leprechaun.”

Seventh Brother – “A lost puppy adopted by a friendly colony of rabbits must find his way home before the cold winds of winter begin to blow in an animated tale of friendship and faith that aims to encourage healthy conversation between parent and child.” One of my kids’ favorites! (Animated)

Tiny Heroes – “The animals of the forest must combine their strengths to defeat a pair of poachers.” (A sequel to Seventh Brother). Another favorite! (Animated)

The Story Lady – “When Grace comes to live with her daughter and son-in-law, she is eager to find a way to be useful in the community. She loves to read stories to children, and decides to read one on public access television. The response is so strong that a large company hears about it and offers her a television series.”

Where the Red Fern Grows – “A timeless tale of devotion between a boy and his hunting dogs and how they reward his kindness with courage.”

Treasures of The Snow – “Lucien’s teasing causes harm to Dani, a small child. Overtaken by catastrophic events, and feeling outcast from his family and friends, Lucien escapes to the forest in the Swiss Alps. He finds peace there, and learns that a price has to be paid for forgiveness before there can be reconciliation.” (Based on the book by Patricia M. St John – such a great book!)
