An Owl (and Finding Joy)

A couple nights ago Grant & I were both awake at 12:30 am. I had just tucked Ellie back into bed.

Grant says, “Do you hear that owl?”

I sat up, eager to listen to it (my hearing is not the best & while I’m lying down, on my side, I can’t hear “small” noises).

It was so fun to hear the owl “hoot” over & over. I got up & looked out a window & couldn’t make anything out. A few minutes later I tried again because it sounded SOO close!

RIGHT as my eyes focused on the owl (mind you, it was very dark), sitting on the very top of a tree just out back (one that Cardinals like to sit on), it FLEW right in front of my eyes.

While I couldn’t see any details of the owl, I could clearly see the shape & I knew it was the owl as the “hooting” became a bit more distant, in the direction it flew.

I was glad I had taken the time to get up & look. It’s just a small thing, but something that doesn’t happen very often at all.

It’s important to find joy in the little things. 💚💙

What things (small or big) have brought you JOY lately?

  • One of my joys is to throw unsalted peanuts on the floor of our deck each morning and watch 4 or more blue jays come and have breakfast while I eat mine. They must watch for me and hear the sliding door open because it’s only a half a minute before the first one comes. God’s creation is awesome!
