Chickens – old & new

Chickens – old & new

Our chicken journey began in May 2017 when we bought our first baby chicks. We purchased 15, received 17, 2 died & had 15 healthy chicks. We had a rough fall and winter & lost all but 4. So in February of 2018, we bought 40 new chicks. Same company. We lost more than half in the first couple days. So we knew we needed a better plan.

Thankfully in 2018 we built our chicken run & coop and we have lost very few chickens since. In 2019 we started incubating and we also were given some chicks from the extension office around the same time. We incubated a 2nd batch of chicks in July, so we have 3 different sizes of chickens right now. It’s fun to see them all interact.

Some unique chicks
Some of the baby chicks. They are too small to be contained in the pen & come and go as they please for now. They like to hang out under the coop. Also you can see it’s apple season. 🙂
