Operation Support Our Troops

Operation Support Our Troops

I saw an ad somewhere for an organization looking for helpers to volunteer & also looking for donations to be able to send care packages to military service members stationed overseas. (They are very highly rated on Charity Navigator…if you’re ever unsure of which charities to support, that’s a great resource).

We were very interested in helping out & signed up for a day to volunteer. We gathered donations & also a local 4H club collected some for us to take. We were thrilled to be able to take in 57 pounds of donations!!

A friend met us there with 3 of her kids & I took Xanna, Logan, Keira & Lucas (unfortunately Lizzy & Emma weren’t feeling well, so they stayed home). We worked for a little over 2 hours & helped to fill about 200 stockings!! Xanna helped wrap some presents & helped fill boxes with the filled stockings. Lucas even got to help wrap up the full pallet!! 😀

It was a privilege to be able to help & we look forward to more opportunities. We also had all the kids write thank you letters to be included in the care packages & were able to take about 60 pictures & letters. ❤️ (We also talked about working on each person doing one letter a week as a school assignment, then we’ll have more letters to take next time. 😊)

An example of a letter we wrote. And, as a bonus, you can just copy the same thing over & over since they’re going to different people! Which is great if you don’t know what to write. Also on their website, they have some pictures you can print out to have kids color, which several of our younger kids did & then wrote a short note on (I wrote a note on Ellie’s). Xanna gave some beautiful pictures she had drawn with a short note. (They actually asked if they could make copies to be able to share them with more people! They were so cute, I wish I had taken pictures!)
I took a picture of this there, because I thought it was a great idea! I did not come up with it.
Logan & Keira filling stockings…they had a U shaped table setup….you grab an empty stocking (or 2) & walk around, adding in something from each box.
Lucas filling boxes
Xanna helped in the back of the warehouse most of the time…filling bigger boxes with the filled stockings & an assortment of other items. (Each box is designed to be able to share with several people).
Lucas LOVED being able to help wrap the pallet. You can see the other pallet behind & to the left…these were all done today! ❤️

We wish we didn’t live so far away (we drive 90 minutes each way), so we could help more often!! Grateful for these opportunities! And P.S….it’s a great homeschool/service project opportunity! At the very least, you can write letters to send! 😀 😉)
